Health Trends We'll See In 2020

About this time every year, various experts make predictions about which health trends we should be watching in the year to come. In December 2018, for example, Fast Company identified the following as the most promising trends to watch in 2019.

  • Taking on Awkward Issues

  • Home Fitness Revolution

  • Dry Bar Effect

  • Productive Fertility Market

  • Diversity and Inclusion

  • Plant-Based Gets Meatier

  • Tele-Health Gets Inventive

  • Helping Us Sleep

  • Taking Fitness Recovery Seriously

  • Wellness Real Estate Boom

  • Reimagining Primary Care

At My Health Pyramid, we noticed that some of those trends took off more than others. Here are what we see as the “things to watch” in 2020, that came as outgrowths of 2019 trends.

  • CBD

  • Beyond Meat versus Impossible Foods and more

  • Peloton

  • Sober Curiosity

  • Mobile Wellness Clinics

In the past few years, awareness and understanding of the health benefits of CBD have increased. It helps with sleep, fitness recovery, inflammation, and other issues.

CBD is legal almost everywhere and is now even being sold in major stores like CVS (although it’s not oral CBD, but CBD infused topical products). Watch for more competition as the CBD war heats up and retailers fight for your dollars.

Beyond Meat versus Impossible Foods and more

2019 was a banner year for plant-based meats. Burger King launched its Impossible Whopper to compete with Carl Jr/Hardees Beyond Burger. Now, instead of having to go to Whole Foods or Sprouts to get your favorite vegan meat options, you can get them at your regular grocery store.

Watch for continued growth in plant-based versions of other meat types, like seafood and poultry. Personally, we at My Health Pyramid are really looking forward to seeing improved vegan cheese options.

Fast Company had it right when they predicted the boom in home-based health fitness. Even with the controversial holiday ad (or maybe because of it), Peloton became a household name in 2019. We can expect a slate of knockoff companies to emerge in 2020, fueling the idea that you can get a gym-worthy workout right in your own home.

Sober Curiosity

One trend not mentioned by Fast Company that emerged in 2019 was the idea of “sober curiosity.” Major beer labels like Heinekin, Beck’s and even the lower cost Coors emerged to fight industry leader O’Douls for shelf space. More

More and more companies and establishments are focusing on making nonalcoholic alternatives that are more than glorified sodas and grape juices. Watch for more craft brews, hard liquor substitutes, and please-we-want-to-see better non alcoholic wines.

Mobile Wellness Clinics

Finally, an outgrowth of the “taking fitness recovery seriously” is an emerging trend of mobile wellness clinics. From helping you to recover from a tough workout to a hangover or the flu, these mobile wellness clinics will show up at your door equipped with IV drips to infuse you with hydration and electrolytes, deep tissue massage, and more.

In all, 2020 is likely to be a year where health and wellness become even more in focus. For more information on how to make 2020 the year you create health that lasts, visit
